Karen Goddard's Biography
Hello. My name is Karen Goddard and I have lived in Durham Region for over 40 years with my family.
I worked in business for nine years. During this time I attended Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in Toronto from 1982-1984 and specialized in Business Communications, Accounting and Business Administration before becoming a homemaker/student/volunteer for 17 years.
In 2002, I achieved my Counselling Techniques Certificate. I graduated Durham College, Oshawa Ontario, with a Human Services Counsellor Diploma (Social Service Worker) in 2005.
In 2001 I joined Distress Centre Durham a non-profit organization as a volunteer and in 2005 became staff "Director of Program Support". In 2010 I received a Suicide Asist Training Certificate through Distress Centres Ontario. During this time I specialized in Suicide/Homicide Survivor Support for bereavement and facilitated groups for suicide survivors. I have acted as on call supervisor for the 24 hour distress helpline and presented suicide awareness to high school students throughout Durham Region. I ran and maintained the DCD Resource Centre for people needing information on Mental Health, Abuse, Suicide and Homicide Bereavement.
I worked with the Ajax Youth Centre helping teens in the Community Helpers Program, was a member of Durham Violence Coalition as well as DEAN (Durham Elder Abuse Network). I have volunteered at Ballycliffe Retirement/Nursing home in Ajax and for two years, was a Lesson Co-ordinator and Teacher of approximately 86 child/youth registrants in a local summer camp.
I presently am an active member of the United Church Women at St. Pauls United Church in Ajax, helping to raise money for community non-profit charities and the United Church.
My motto in life is to treat others the way you expect to be treated.
